Case IH 19297 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame DLCD1
Issue description
This error indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure. Specifically, the Engine Control Module (ECM) has stopped receiving the expected DLCD1 message frame (which contains direct control lamp data, such as warning light statuses) from the Instrument Cluster (IC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) within the required timeframe.

Check the cause
Verify CAN Bus Communication: Use an OEM diagnostic service tool to check if the Instrument Cluster (IC) or VCM is active and communicating on the CAN bus.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECM and the Instrument Cluster/VCM for any signs of chafing, melting, or corrosion.
Check Connector Pins: Inspect the pins at the ECM and IC/VCM connectors for bent, pushed-back, or corroded terminals.
Measure CAN Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure the terminating resistors are intact (a healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms).
Check Module Configuration: Verify that the CAN configuration of the IC/VCM is correct. A wrong CAN configuration in the IC/VCM can prevent the DLCD1 message from being transmitted.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Isolate the Harness
Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECM to the Instrument Cluster (IC) or VCM. Disconnect the harness connectors at both ends.
Test for Continuity and Shorts
Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from end to end. Next, test the CAN wires for a short to ground or a short to power.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If an open circuit, high resistance, or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected harness section.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect all connectors securely, ensuring they click into place. Reconnect the battery.
Reprogram the Module
If the wiring is perfectly intact, the issue likely lies within the Instrument Cluster or VCM's internal CAN controller. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool to verify the configuration and re-flash/reprogram the IC/VCM.
Replace the Module
If reprogramming fails or the module's CAN controller is physically defective, replace the Instrument Cluster or VCM.
Clear Codes
Clear the fault codes and test operate the machine to verify the DLCD1 timeout does not return.
