Case IH 19299 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Aftertreatment Control Module (DCU/ACM): CAN timeout error - DPF1S message
Issue description
The 'DPF1S' CAN message contains real-time data regarding the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Soot Mass. A 'timeout error' means the control module is no longer receiving this critical data frame over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus within the expected time interval, indicating a communication loss between the Particulate Matter (PM) sensor / Soot Sensor and the main control network.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Tier 4b
- Magnum
- Puma
- Optum
- Steiger
- T7 series
Check the cause
Check CAN Bus Connections: Inspect the installation and proper connection of the Engine Control Unit (ECM) and the PM/Soot sensor to the CAN vehicle network.
Inspect Wiring Harness: Look for CAN cables that are disconnected, broken, or chafed. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to power.
Verify Power and Ground: Ensure the PM/Soot sensor is receiving the correct operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.
Check CAN Configuration: Verify via a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) that the CAN configuration in the ECM module is correct and hasn't been corrupted.
Repair steps
Locate the Sensor
Find the Particulate Matter (PM) / Soot sensor on the exhaust aftertreatment system, typically located downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
Disconnect and Inspect
Unplug the sensor's wiring harness connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture intrusion.
Test the Circuit
Using a multimeter, verify the integrity of the CAN bus wiring from the sensor connector back to the ECM.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring, power, and ground are all within specification, the internal CAN controller inside the PM/Soot sensor has likely failed. Remove the defective sensor from the exhaust bung and install the replacement.
Clear and Verify
Reconnect the harness, clear the active and pending fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and run the engine to verify that the DPF1S message is successfully transmitting and the 19299 code does not return.
