Case IH 19300 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame DPF1S
Issue description
This fault indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the system is experiencing a timeout error when trying to transmit or receive the DPF1S message. The DPF1S message carries critical data regarding the Diesel Particulate Filter Soot Mass (soot density/load in the DPF).
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH tractors
- Case IH combines
- Case IH N-Series loaders
- FPT engines
- Tier 4a
- Stage V
Check the cause
Check the vehicle wiring harnesses for CAN cables that are disconnected, broken, or short-circuited to ground/power.
Verify that the CAN bus termination resistors are present, undamaged, and reading the correct resistance value (typically 60 ohms across the network).
Check the installation and proper connection of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Instrument Cluster to the CAN vehicle network. Inspect for loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.
Check for a weak battery, severe voltage drops during cranking, or poor chassis grounds, as CAN signals are highly voltage-sensitive.
Verify that the CAN configuration in the ECM/VCM is correct and hasn't been corrupted.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the vehicle's CAN network via a protocol adapter to monitor parameters and confirm the 19300 fault code is active.
Inspect Wiring
Trace the CAN bus wiring harness from the ECM to the aftertreatment sensors. Pay special attention to bending points (wings, platforms) and areas exposed to high heat near the DPF.
Test CAN Lines
Using a multimeter, test the CAN-High and CAN-Low lines for continuity and ensure there is no short circuit between the two lines or to the chassis ground.
Repair/Replace Harness
If a break or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using OEM-approved CAN bus bridge connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Check/Replace Terminator
If the network resistance is out of spec, locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminator.
ECM Verification
If the wiring, connectors, and termination resistance are all perfectly intact, the CAN controller within the ECM itself may be defective. In this case, the ECM will require replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.
Clear and Verify
Use the Case IH EST to clear the fault code. Cycle the ignition and run the engine to verify the DPF1S message is successfully transmitting and the code does not return.
