Case IH 19302 – ECU: Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame DSE

Issue description

This fault code indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the control module has lost communication with the DSE (Dosing System Equipment), also known as the DEF or AdBlue Dosing Module. The controller is not receiving the expected data frames from the DEF dosing system within the required timeframe, which can prevent proper emissions system operation.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Tier 4A
  • Tier 4 Final
  • N-Series Loader Backhoes
  • T7 Series
  • Tractors
  • Combines

Check the cause

  1. Check that the DEF Dosing Module is receiving proper battery voltage and has a solid ground, including associated fuses and relays.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the DEF Dosing Module and inspect pins for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out terminals.

  3. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ECU/DCU and the DSE for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

  4. Measure the CAN bus terminating resistance (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  5. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other CAN timeout codes that might indicate a main CAN harness issue rather than a DSE failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Repair wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal broken wires, chafing, or corroded connectors on the CAN lines or power supply, repair the harness and retest.

  3. Remove old DSE

If wiring and CAN continuity are good, the DEF Dosing Module has failed internally. Disconnect the DEF fluid lines and electrical connector, then unbolt the module from its mounting bracket.

  4. Install new DSE

Mount the new DEF Dosing Module, securely reconnect the fluid lines, and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Clear codes and calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Use the New Holland/Case IH EST diagnostic software to clear fault code 19302 and program/configure the new dosing module to the vehicle.

  6. Perform system test

Run a forced DEF dosing test or SCR system functional test via the diagnostic software to confirm the repair and check for leaks.
