Case IH 19305 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame EBC1VS

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication or timed out while waiting to receive the EBC1VS (Electronic Brake Controller 1) CAN message from the Body Computer (BC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM).

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN
  • Wheel loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine Control Module (ECM), Body Computer (BC) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM), and the Electronic Brake System (EBS) controller for disconnected, broken, or short-circuited cables.

  2. Verify the physical presence and connection of the EBS module to the CAN network.

  3. Test the correct functioning of the CAN controller on the EBS module.

  4. Verify the CAN configuration in the Body Computer or VCM to ensure it is not preventing the module from broadcasting the EBC1VS message.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while testing electrical circuits.

  2. Harness Continuity Test

Locate the CAN bus harness connecting the ECM, VCM/BC, and EBS. Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires using a multimeter. Repair or replace any damaged wiring, rubbed-through insulation, or corroded connector pins.

  3. CAN Resistor Check

With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors is faulty or there is an open circuit in the bus.

  4. Reconfigure VCM/BC

If the wiring is intact, connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check the configuration of the Body Computer/VCM. If the configuration is corrupted, re-flash or reconfigure the module to ensure it is programmed to send the EBC1VS frame.

  5. Replace EBS Module

If the wiring is good, the configuration is correct, and the EBS module's CAN controller is confirmed defective (failing to broadcast to the VCM), replace the Electronic Brake System module.

  6. Clear and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault code using the CNH EST, and test operate the machine to verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Electronic Brake System (EBS) Module

Often manufactured by Knorr-Bremse or WABCO for CNH. Requires programming/flashing via the CNH EST diagnostic software to match the machine's specific configuration.

  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / Body Computer (BC)

Requires programming/flashing via the CNH EST diagnostic software to match the machine's specific configuration.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connectors
