19306

Case IH 19306 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout of CAN-Receive-Frame Wheel Speed Information Frame (WSI)

Issue description

The control module expecting to receive the tractor's wheel speed data over the CAN bus has stopped receiving that specific data frame within the expected time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Magnum Series (235-340, 380)
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • N-Series Loader Backhoes (580N, 590SN)

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes using a diagnostic tool to see if other CAN bus timeout codes are present, which would indicate a broader network issue rather than a sensor failure.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus main wiring harnesses and connectors for moisture, corrosion, or chafing.

  3. Inspect the wheel speed sensor (mounted on the transmission housing, rear axle, or wheel motor) and its pigtail harness for physical damage from field debris.

  4. Verify proper power and ground to the module responsible for broadcasting the WSI (usually the transmission controller or ABS/brake controller).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the battery before probing CAN bus pins or replacing electrical components.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

Disconnect the wheel speed sensor and the transmission controller harness. Inspect the pins. If green corrosion or moisture is present, clean the pins thoroughly with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Ohm Test the CAN Bus

With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor is broken or a harness is open.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring and CAN network are intact but the sensor is dead (failing to generate a signal for the transmission controller to broadcast), unbolt the old sensor from the housing.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Thread or bolt the new wheel speed sensor into place. Reconnect the harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal is tight.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and test drive the machine to verify the ECM is successfully receiving the WSI frame.
