Case IH 19309 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of Message from ECU to NOx Upstream Sensor

Issue description

The engine's control module has lost communication with the upstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor and is not receiving the expected data frames within the required timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case CE N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs)
  • Farmall (110A-140A)
  • Maxxum (115-150)
  • Puma (150-220)
  • Magnum (180-380)
  • Steiger 4WD / Quadtrac series (370-620)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the upstream NOx sensor to the ECM for chafing, heat damage, or severed wires.

  2. Disconnect the upstream NOx sensor connector (C186) and check for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion.

  3. Verify that the NOx sensor module is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines for continuity and verify that the CAN bus terminating resistors are intact.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the upstream NOx sensor

Locate the upstream NOx sensor, which is mounted in the exhaust downpipe before the DOC and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) assembly.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the NOx sensor's control module.

  4. Unscrew the NOx sensor probe

Carefully unscrew the NOx sensor probe from the exhaust pipe. (Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized due to high exhaust heat).

  5. Install the new upstream NOx sensor

Install the new upstream NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe.

  6. Mount the sensor control module

Mount the attached sensor control module and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Reconnect the battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear the fault code and initialize

Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Case Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 19309 fault code and perform any required aftertreatment resets or NOx sensor initialization routines.
