1931-19 - UCM

Case IH 1931-19 - UCM – UCM: Rear pilot head #2 reporting communication fault with vehicle controller.

Issue description

The Universal Control Module (UCM) has lost CAN BUS or LIN bus communication with the electronic actuator (referred to as the "pilot head") on the #2 rear remote valve (Selective Control Valve / SCV). When this communication fails, the valve cannot be commanded electronically and will typically default to neutral, preventing the #2 hydraulic remote from operating.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • Quadtrac AFS Connect
  • Puma AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the electrical connector at the #2 rear remote valve for contamination, water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

  2. Check the CAN BUS wiring harness running between the #2 remote valve and the UCM for continuity, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Perform a swap test by exchanging the #2 pilot head (actuator) with a known good one from an adjacent valve (e.g., remote #1 or #3) to isolate whether the issue is the wiring or the actuator itself.

  4. Verify if the UCM software is corrupted; reloading the software into the central controller via the Electronic Service Tool (EST) may resolve communication glitches.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the exterior of the #2 rear remote valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the actuator is removed.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical connector from the #2 pilot head.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Remove the mounting screws (usually Allen or Torx head) securing the electronic pilot head to the mechanical valve slice. Carefully pull the actuator straight off the valve spool.

  5. Install the New Actuator

Ensure the mating surface is clean and the O-rings/seals are in place. Slide the new pilot head onto the valve spool and tighten the mounting screws to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new actuator and reconnect the battery.

  7. Configuration / Calibration

Perform the EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) valve renumbering and configuration procedure using the tractor's AFS Pro display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) so the UCM recognizes the new valve actuator on the CAN network.
