Case IH 19310 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM): Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame to Soot sensor

The control module is failing to communicate with the exhaust Soot Sensor (also known as a Particulate Matter or PM sensor) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The expected data frame containing soot mass or sensor status is timing out, indicating a loss of signal, a wiring failure, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the connector leading to the Soot Sensor (located on the exhaust aftertreatment system, typically downstream of the DPF) for melting, chafing, or physical damage.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the Soot Sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

   CAN Bus & Voltage Test: Verify the power supply (Vbat) and ground circuits to the sensor. Test the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines for continuity back to the ECU, ensuring there are no short circuits to ground or battery voltage.

   Sensor Self-Diagnosis: If the wiring and voltages are correct, the sensor has likely suffered an internal failure (often reported as a self-diagnosed error where it stops transmitting valid CAN messages).

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Soot Sensor on the exhaust pipe near the DPF.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main engine harness.

   Remove the Sensor

   Carefully unscrew the Soot Sensor from the exhaust bung. (Note: Exhaust sensors can seize due to high heat; penetrating oil may be required).

   Install the New Part

   Thread the new Soot Sensor into the exhaust bung and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Plug the sensor's pigtail connector back into the machine's wiring harness.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EASy tool or an aftermarket equivalent like Jaltest) to the diagnostic port to clear the 19310 fault code and reset the aftertreatment system.
