Case IH 19311 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Timeout Error of CAN-Send-Frame
Issue description
This fault code indicates a communication breakdown on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN bus). Specifically, the control module attempted to transmit a data frame (message) across the network but timed out before the transmission could be completed. This is typically caused by a physical fault in the CAN bus wiring, a failed termination resistor, or a module pulling the network down.

Check the cause
CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the machine powered off and the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the CAN HI and CAN LOW pins on the diagnostic port or harness. A healthy CAN bus should measure exactly 60 ohms.
Check Terminators: If the resistance measures 120 ohms, one of the two CAN bus termination resistors is missing, broken, or disconnected. If it measures near 0 ohms, there is a short circuit.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the engine and chassis wiring harnesses for rubbed, frayed, or broken wires. Pay special attention to areas where the harness routes under the cab, near the engine block, or around the transmission.
Connector Integrity: Disconnect the ECU and CAN terminators to check for pushed pins, moisture, or corrosion inside the connectors.
Module Isolation: If the bus is dead, disconnect modules one by one (leaving at least one connected) to see if a specific controller is internally shorted and pulling the network down.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Terminators
Find the CAN bus terminators. On Case IH tractors, these are typically located near the ECU/controllers, under the cab air filter, or behind the seat near the fuse panel.
Replace Faulty Resistors
If your resistance test failed, replace the faulty CAN terminator. Note: Case IH issued a service bulletin recommending the replacement of older square 4-pin active/passive terminators with a newer, more stable 3-pin "cap style" resistor using an adapter harness.
Repair Wiring
If a short or break was found in the harness during the diagnostic phase, splice and repair the CAN HI/CAN LOW twisted pair wires, or replace the affected harness section.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect all modules, terminators, and the battery.
Clear Codes
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the stored 19311 fault code and perform any necessary resets to take the engine out of limp mode.
