Case IH 19312 – Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU): Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame ECU2WPC to Water Pump Controller

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Water Pump Controller (WPC) over the CAN bus network, and the expected data frame transmission has timed out.

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness running between the Engine ECU and the Water Pump Controller for chafing, breaks, or heat damage.

   Disconnect the harnesses at both the ECU and the Water Pump Controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.

   Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for proper continuity. Ensure there are no shorts to ground or shorts to power.

   Verify that the Water Pump Controller is receiving proper operating voltage from the battery/relay and has a solid ground connection.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while testing electrical pins.

   Trace the Harness

   Locate the Water Pump Controller (actuator) on the engine and trace the communication harness back to the Engine ECU.

   Test the Circuit

   Using a multimeter, perform a pin-to-pin continuity test on the CAN lines between the ECU and the WPC.

   Repair Wiring

   If high resistance, an open circuit, or a short is found, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

   Replace the Controller

   If the wiring harness, power, and ground are all verified to be in good working order, the internal circuitry of the Water Pump Controller has likely failed (the actuator can suffer internal electrical failures or motor stalls). Replace the Water Pump Controller.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19312 fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
