Case IH 19313 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN timeout error - EFL_P1 message (Engine fluid level/pressure)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication with the sensor node responsible for broadcasting engine fluid data over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. A timeout indicates the ECM waited for this data packet but did not receive it within the expected timeframe.

   Check for accompanying codes indicating broader CAN bus errors (e.g., CAN A or CAN B bus off faults) which would indicate a total network failure rather than an isolated sensor issue.

   Locate the Engine Oil Pressure sensor and fluid level sensors. Check the physical condition of the sensor and its connector.

   Inspect the CAN wiring harness connecting the fluid pressure/level sensors to the ECM. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper that could short the CAN High or CAN Low lines.

   Disconnect the sensor and ECM connectors to check for pushed-back pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.

   Safety First

   Put the tractor in park, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable (-) before servicing the electrical system.

   Clean the Area

   Remove any buildup of grease, oil, or debris around the engine oil pressure sensor and ECM to prevent contamination during repair.

   Test Continuity

   Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the fluid pressure sensor connector back to the ECM.

   Repair Wiring

   If an open circuit or short to ground is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the affected harness pigtail.

   Replace Sensor

   If the wiring harness and ECM connections test good, the internal CAN transceiver within the smart sensor itself has likely failed and is no longer broadcasting the EFL_P1 message. Replace the Engine Oil Pressure / Fluid Level sensor.

   Reassemble and Clear

   Reconnect the battery ground cable, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19313 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return and that oil pressure reads correctly on the dash.
