Case IH 19315 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): CAN-Receive Frame Engine Gas Flow Rate (EGF1)

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error. The system logs this fault when the control module experiences a timeout or data length error while expecting to receive the 'EGF1' (Engine Gas Flow Rate) CAN message.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Machines equipped with Tier 4B (Urea/SCR) engines
  • Case IH Magnum series tractors
  • Case N-Series loaders

Check the cause

  1. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for multiple CAN timeout codes to rule out a main CAN bus short.

  2. Inspect the CAN wiring harness between the ECM and the engine air intake/EGR sensors for broken wires, chafing, or disconnected cables.

  3. Disconnect and inspect the plugs at the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor, EGR sensors, and the ECM for pushed pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  4. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across CAN High and CAN Low (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  5. Verify if the Mass Airflow Sensor or EGR sensor is configured correctly and functioning.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit or broken wire in the CAN lines leading to the air intake sensors, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splicing methods or replace the damaged harness section.

  3. Clean Connections

Apply dielectric grease to the connectors of the MAF sensor, EGR sensor, and ECM, and securely reconnect them.

  4. Replace Defective Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the EGF1 message is still missing (data length error or timeout), replace the Mass Airflow Sensor or EGR Flow Sensor, as its internal CAN controller may have failed.

  5. ECM Check

If the sensor and wiring are both confirmed good, the ECM's CAN controller may be defective. The ECM will need to be reflashed or replaced by a certified dealer.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, connect the Case IH EST, clear the inactive fault codes, and run the engine to verify the 19315 code does not return.
