Case IH 19316 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): UREA Temperature in Pump Module out of range | Urea temperature box - physical | Reagent-temperature sensor of pump module out of range

Issue description

The system has detected that the temperature sensor located inside the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Supply Module (Urea Pump) is reporting a temperature value that is outside the physically plausible operating range. This usually indicates a failed internal temperature sensor, a wiring harness issue (open or short circuit), or a failure in the pump's internal heating circuit causing the fluid to freeze or overheat.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related electrical codes (19055, 19056, 19057, or 19058) which point directly to a hard electrical failure.

  2. Inspect the main electrical harness connecting to the DEF Supply Module for backed-out pins, corrosion, or chafed wires.

  3. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor the 'Urea Pump Module Temperature' parameter. If it reads an impossible default value (e.g., -40°C or +150°C) at normal ambient temperature, the internal sensor has failed.

  4. Check the engine coolant lines running to the DEF pump module. Ensure they are hot when the engine is at operating temperature, as a frozen pump will cause the sensor to read out of range.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery. Wait at least 5-10 minutes after key-off to allow the DEF system to purge fluid back into the tank.

  2. Disconnect Coolant Lines

    Clamp off the engine coolant lines running to the DEF pump module to prevent coolant loss, then disconnect them.

  3. Disconnect DEF Lines

    Disconnect the DEF inlet, outlet, and backflow lines. Note: DEF is highly corrosive. Immediately wash away any spilled DEF with warm water to prevent damage to surrounding metal and wiring.

  4. Disconnect Electrical

    Unplug the main electrical harness from the DCU to the pump module.

  5. Remove the Pump

    Unbolt the DEF Supply Module from its mounting bracket (often located near the DEF tank or on the frame rail) and remove it from the machine.

  6. Install New Module

    Mount the replacement DEF Supply Module.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF lines, coolant lines, and electrical connector. Ensure all fittings click securely into place.

  8. Refill and Prime

    Top off any lost engine coolant. Turn the key to the ON position to allow the system to prime.

  9. Clear Codes and Test

    Use the CNH EST diagnostic tool to clear fault code 19316. Run a dynamic DEF leak test or dosing quantity test to command the pump to build pressure (typically around 9 bar / 130 psi) and verify the temperature reading is now accurate.
