Case IH 19317 – Engine Control Module (ECM): CAN-Receive-Frame EGR2 to ECM

Indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error. The Engine Control Module is expecting to receive a specific data frame (status or control message) from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve's smart actuator over the CAN bus, but the message is missing or timing out.

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness running between the EGR valve actuator and the ECM for chafed wires, opens, or shorts to ground/power.

   Disconnect the EGR valve actuator and the ECM connectors. Check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion, which can interrupt CAN signals.

   Verify that the EGR actuator is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground. A module without power cannot broadcast its CAN frame.

   With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure network integrity (typically around 60 ohms).

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs or replacing sensors/actuators.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or corroded connector in the CAN lines, repair the harness using an OEM pigtail or wiring repair kit.

   Replace the EGR Valve/Actuator

   If the wiring, power, and ground are all verified as good, the internal electronics of the EGR valve actuator have failed and are no longer communicating on the CAN bus. The EGR valve assembly must be replaced.

   Reassemble and Test

   Install the new EGR valve using new gaskets. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
