Case IH 19321 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Engine Retarder Configuration BAM message (Timeout Error)
Issue description
This is a CAN bus communication error. It indicates that the control module is not receiving the expected Broadcast Announce Message (BAM) packet containing the Engine Retarder Configuration over the CAN network within the required timeframe.

Check the cause
Verify if the machine is actually equipped with an engine retarder. If it is not, this code often points to a software configuration mismatch.
Perform a CAN bus physical layer test: Disconnect the battery and measure the CAN bus termination resistance across the diagnostic port (should be approximately 60 ohms).
Reconnect the battery and measure CAN voltages. CAN High should be ~2.5–3.0V, and CAN Low should be ~2.0–2.5V.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the ECU and the diagnostic port for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins. Pay special attention to the first 12 inches of the harness leading to the ECU connector.
Check for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power on the CAN High and CAN Low lines.

Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery and electronic control units before performing any electrical repairs or welding on the machine.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal a short, open circuit, or physical damage to the CAN lines, repair the damaged wiring or replace the affected connector pins.
Verify ECU Configuration
If the wiring is completely intact, connect the Case Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scan tool. Navigate to the ECU/VCM configuration settings.
Correct the Software Mismatch
Ensure the engine retarder configuration in the software matches the physical hardware of the machine. If the machine does not have an engine retarder, disable the feature/BAM message expectation in the ECU configuration.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault code and cycle the key. Test operate the machine to see if the code returns.
Module Reflash/Replacement
If the code persists, the wiring is perfect, and the configuration is correct, the ECU may require a software reflash by a dealer or complete replacement.
