Case IH 19322 – Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of Engine Retarder Configuration packet frame

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error. It indicates that the control module expecting to receive the configuration data packet for the engine retarder (exhaust brake/engine brake) has timed out because the message was not broadcast over the CAN bus within the expected timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH agricultural equipment (Tier 4 Final)
  • Case N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs)
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and charging system operation, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN network.

  2. Visually inspect the main CAN bus wiring harness between the VCM, ECM, and the engine retarder control circuit for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.

  3. Disconnect the harness at the VCM and ECM to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with batteries disconnected by measuring resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a failed terminating resistor or open circuit).

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool - EST) and clear the inactive fault codes. Cycle the key and operate the machine to see if code 19322 returns as active.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the harness inspection or resistance test revealed an open or short circuit, repair the damaged section of the CAN wiring harness using approved splice methods, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Clean Connections

If moisture or light corrosion was found in the module connectors, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.

  4. Software Update

Check the CNH EST for any available software updates (flash files) for the VCM or ECM. Sometimes, CAN timeout parameters are overly sensitive and are resolved via an OEM software reflash.

  5. Module Replacement

If the wiring is 100% intact, terminating resistors are good, and the software is up to date, the module responsible for broadcasting the retarder configuration may have suffered an internal failure and will require replacement.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • CAN Bus Terminating Resistor

Generic CNH part, check specific parts catalog for your model's resistor

  • Wiring Harness Repair Kit / Pigtails

    Generic electrical repair

  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / Engine Control Module (ECM)

Requires exact machine serial number for fitment; must be programmed by a dealer upon installation
