Case IH 19323 (F-518653-31) – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): External engine shutdown request received
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine was commanded to shut down by an external module over the CAN bus network (specifically via the BC2EDC2 CAN message). This is not an internal engine failure, but a protective failsafe or an operator-initiated emergency stop due to a critical safety interlock, an emergency stop button press, or a severe fault in another system.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Farmall Series (40, 45, 50, 115U)
- Magnum Series (235-340)
- Steiger
- Maxxum
- Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
- W130B Wheel Loaders
Check the cause
Check for companion codes in the Body Controller (BC), Vehicle Control Module (VCM), or Transmission Control Unit (TCU) to identify the module that requested the shutdown
Inspect safety interlocks, including the operator presence switch (seat switch), PTO engagement switches, and parking brake interlocks for faults or shorts
Check emergency stop switches to verify the E-Stop button is not depressed, stuck, or suffering from internal contact failure
Inspect CAN Bus lines (CAN A and CAN C) between the Vehicle Controller and the Engine ECU for communication timeouts or harness damage
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Scan All Modules
Read all active and stored fault codes across the entire machine network, not just the Engine ECU.
Identify the Root Cause
Locate the primary fault in the requesting system (e.g., a failed seat switch, a severed CAN wire, or a critical hydraulic pressure loss).
Perform the Physical Repair
Replace the faulty safety switch, repair the damaged wiring harness, or clear the mechanical fault in the requesting system.
Emergency Re-Start (If necessary)
If the machine is stranded and needs to be moved into a shop, perform an 'Emergency Re-start' once the engine has been commanded to low idle. This allows 30 seconds of operation to move the machine before it automatically reduces to low idle speed again.
Clear Codes
Clear the 19323 code from the Engine ECU and the companion codes from the Body Controller.
Test Run
Operate the machine under normal conditions to verify the safety interlocks function correctly and the code does not return.
