Case IH 19327 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): CAN-Receive-Frame ERC1BC (Retarder Enable - Brake Assist Switch signal)

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error. It indicates that the control module has lost communication with the Electronic Retarder Controller (ERC1) or that the specific CAN message regarding the "Retarder Enable / Brake Assist Switch" signal has timed out, is missing, or has an incorrect data length.

   Perform a CAN Bus Network Test using a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ECM/VCM and the Electronic Retarder Controller (ERC1), verifying the standard 60-ohm termination resistance.

   Inspect the wiring harness for the driveline retarder and the brake assist switch for chafed wires, short circuits to ground, or broken/disconnected CAN cables.

   Test the physical Retarder Enable / Brake Assist Switch on the dash/console for proper continuity when toggled.

   Verify that the Electronic Retarder Controller has the correct CAN configuration programmed to rule out a software mismatch.

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect the battery before servicing CAN bus wiring or control modules to prevent voltage spikes.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or short circuit in the CAN lines leading to the ERC1 or the switch, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splicing techniques or replace the damaged harness section.

   Clean Connectors

   Disconnect the plugs at the Electronic Retarder Controller and the Brake Assist Switch. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are pushed back or corroded.

   If the wiring is intact but the switch fails the continuity test, replace the Retarder Enable / Brake Assist Switch. If the switch is functional and wiring is perfect, the Electronic Retarder Controller (ERC1) itself is likely defective and must be replaced.
