Case IH 19328 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): CAN-Receive-Frame ERC1DR (Electronic Retarder Controller #1)

Issue description

CAN bus communication timeout error indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is failing to receive the expected data packets (frames) from the Electronic Retarder Controller over the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN bus).

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH T7 Series
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the Electronic Retarder Controller (ERC) is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness at both the Engine ECU and the ERC to inspect pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture ingress.

  3. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ERC and the ECM for continuity and ensure they are not shorted to ground or battery voltage.

  4. Ensure the CAN wiring harness is not routed too closely to high-voltage or high-interference electrical components.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Modules

Locate the Engine ECU and the Electronic Retarder Controller.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If your diagnostic checks revealed an open wire, short, or high resistance in the CAN lines, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected pigtail connector.

  4. Module Replacement (If Applicable)

If the wiring, power, and ground to the ERC are all verified as good, the Electronic Retarder Controller itself has likely failed internally and is no longer transmitting data. Unbolt the faulty ERC and install the replacement module.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Reconnect all harness connectors securely, ensuring the locking tabs click into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear and Test

Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 19328 fault code. Start the engine and operate the machine to verify that the code does not return and the retarder functions normally.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Electronic Retarder Controller (ERC)

Requires exact machine serial number for dealer lookup

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connectors

Fitment depends on the specific damaged section of the harness
