Case IH 19329 (DTC 938B) – Cab Control Module (CCM) or Body Computer (BC): CAN-Receive-Frame Transmission Control 2 (ETC2)
Issue description
The ETC2 CAN frame contains critical transmission data, specifically the selected gear and gear ratio. This fault is triggered when the expected communication from the transmission controller is missing, times out, or contains an incorrect data length.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Quadtrac
Check the cause
Verify battery voltage and the power/ground circuits feeding the Electronic Transmission Controller (ETC) to ensure it is not dropping off the CAN network due to under-voltage.
Inspect the CAN cable connecting the Transmission Controller to the Cab Control Module for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or corrosion at the harness connectors.
Perform a continuity test and check for short circuits in the CAN High and CAN Low wiring between the modules.
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the CAN configuration in the Transmission Controller ECU to ensure it is broadcasting correct data lengths.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, short circuit, or corroded connector pin in the CAN bus harness, repair or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Transmission Controller
If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the TCU is still not broadcasting the ETC2 frame (or is completely offline), the CAN controller inside the Gearbox Control unit is defective. Remove the faulty Transmission Controller and install the replacement unit.
Reconfigure and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Connect the EST diagnostic laptop to the tractor. Flash the correct firmware to the new Transmission Controller, verify the CAN configuration matches the tractor's options, and perform any required transmission calibrations.
Clear Codes
Clear the 19329 fault code from the CCM/Body Computer and test drive the tractor to ensure the selected gear data is displaying correctly on the instrument cluster.
