19329

Case IH 19329 – Engine Control Unit (ECU/EDC) or Cab Control Module (CCM): CAN-Receive-Frame Transmission Control 2 (ETC2)

Issue description

A CAN bus communication timeout error indicating that the receiving module has stopped receiving the expected ETC2 (Electronic Transmission Controller 2) data message from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) over the CAN bus.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Magnum Series (235, 250, 310, 340)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Farmall Series (115U)

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage is stable, as low or spiking voltage can cause modules to temporarily drop off the CAN bus

  2. Check the fuses, relays, and ground straps supplying power to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU)

  3. With battery disconnected, measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should be exactly 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a failed resistor or open circuit, 0 ohms indicates a short)

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness running between the transmission and the cab/engine for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the CAN bus or unplugging modules.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connectors

Locate the connectors at the Transmission Control Unit and the Engine/Cab controllers. Unplug them and inspect for moisture, green corrosion, or backed-out pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  3. Repair Harness / Resistors

If the resistance test failed, trace the CAN backbone to locate the break or the faulty terminating resistor. Replace the damaged wire section or plug in a new terminating resistor.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU and CCM.

  5. Test Operation

Start the tractor and operate the transmission through its ranges. If code 19329 returns immediately and all wiring, power, and grounds to the TCU have been verified as good, the Transmission Control Unit itself has likely suffered an internal failure and will require replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • CAN Bus Termination Module (Resistor)

    55.510.070

Commonly used on Magnum and Steiger models to terminate the CAN circuit

  • Transmission Control Unit (TCU)

Part number varies heavily by specific tractor model and transmission type; refer to the specific machine's parts catalog

  • 120-ohm CAN terminating resistors

  • Deutsch DT/HD series connector pins

  • CAN-rated twisted-pair wiring
