Case IH 19330 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU / ETC7): CAN-Receive-Frame Transmission Control 7 (ETC7)
Issue description
A communication error indicating a CAN bus timeout where the expected data frame from the Electronic Transmission Control 7 (ETC7) module is missing, delayed, or not being received by the other modules on the network.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH T7 Series
- STM N Series Loaders
Check the cause
Check for associated active CAN bus fault codes to determine if multiple modules are offline, which indicates a main CAN backbone failure rather than a TCU issue.
Verify that the Transmission Control Unit is receiving proper voltage, as an under-voltage condition or missing power/ground will cause the module to drop off the CAN network.
Inspect the CAN cables connecting to the ETC for disconnections, broken wires, or short circuits.
Verify that the CAN configuration in the Transmission Controller ECU is correct and has not been corrupted.
Repair steps
Access the Transmission Control Module (TCU)
Locate the TCU on your specific model (often located under the cab floor or near the transmission housing).
Visual Inspection
Disconnect the harness from the TCU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
Test the CAN Bus
With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the TCU connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor or wire is broken. If it reads 0 ohms, the CAN lines are shorted together.
Test Power Circuits
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Probe the power and ground pins at the TCU connector to ensure the module is receiving full battery voltage.
Repair Wiring or Replace Module
If wiring damage is found, repair the broken CAN lines or power wires. If power, ground, and CAN resistance are all within specification, the Transmission Control Unit itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.
Reprogramming
If the TCU is replaced, the new module will need to be flashed/configured by a Case IH dealer using the EST (Electronic Service Tool) to match the tractor's specific transmission type (e.g., AutoCommand/CVT vs. Powershift).
Clear Codes
Clear the fault codes and test drive the machine to ensure the ETC7 CAN frame is broadcasting correctly.
