Case IH 19331 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame ETC8
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) has lost communication with the Transmission Control Unit (TCU / ETC) over the CAN bus network. The engine is expecting to receive the 'ETC8' CAN message, which contains data regarding the transmission and torque converter ratio, but the message is not arriving within the programmed time limit.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- Tier 4b
- Puma 130
- Puma 145
- Puma 160
- Puma 180
- Puma 200
- Puma 210
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- Optum Series
Check the cause
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the Transmission Control Unit is online and communicating on the CAN network.
Verify the power supply and ground to the Transmission Control Unit. Low battery voltage (especially during cranking) can cause the TCU to temporarily drop off the network.
Inspect the CAN bus wiring (twisted pair wires, typically yellow and green) between the Engine ECU and the Transmission ECU for chafing, broken wires, or shorts to ground/power.
Check the harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and Transmission ECU for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Repair Wiring/Connectors
If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires or corroded connectors on the CAN bus line between the Engine and Transmission ECUs, splice in a CAN bus wiring repair connector or replace the damaged harness section.
Address Voltage Issues
If the fault was caused by a voltage drop, replace the aging battery or repair the alternator/charging circuit.
Replace the TCU
If the wiring, connectors, and voltage are all perfectly intact, the CAN controller inside the Transmission Control Unit has likely failed internally. Remove the defective TCU and install the replacement module.
Reprogram and Calibrate
If a new Transmission Control Unit is installed, it must be flashed/configured to the tractor using the Case IH EST. You will also need to perform a transmission calibration procedure.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the AFS Pro display or diagnostic scanner to clear the stored 19331 fault code.
