Case IH 19333 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): CAN timeout error - FlEco message (Fuel Economy send message according to SAE J1939-71)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) is failing to receive the expected "FlEco" data frame over the SAE J1939 CAN bus network within the required timeframe.

   Verify the presence and proper connection of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to the vehicle's CAN network

2. 2

   Check the CAN bus cables for physical damage, looking for disconnected, broken, or chafed wires

3. 3

   Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for short circuits to ground, short circuits to power, or shorts to each other within the wiring harness

   Verify the correct functioning of the CAN controller within the ECU and the Instrument Cluster

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

   Inspect Connectors

   Locate the main wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU and the instrument cluster/cab controller. Disconnect them and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean and reseat if necessary.

   Test CAN Backbone

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy J1939 CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (indicating both 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact).

   Repair Wiring

   If the resistance is out of spec, or if continuity testing reveals a break or short in the CAN lines between the ECU and the cab, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

   ECU Replacement

   If the wiring harness, terminating resistors, and connections are all verified to be in good working order, the internal CAN controller within the Engine ECU is likely defective. The ECU will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct machine software by a dealer.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, power on the machine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 19333 fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
