Issue description

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / Reagent) suction line heater failed to thaw the fluid in the inlet line within the programmed time limit. It indicates that the control module has detected a malfunction in the suction tube's heating circuit, which could be caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, an over-temperature condition in the heater's power stage, or extreme ambient conditions overcoming the heater's capacity.

Check the cause

  1. Check for software updates: Verify if the DCU and Engine ECU have the latest software (reference Case IH Service Bulletin 2014-005 CIH N SB for DEF freezing issues).

  2. Check for related electrical codes: Look for accompanying DCU electrical fault codes like P20C3 or P20C4, which indicate a hard electrical failure rather than just a frozen line.

  3. Inspect electrical connections: Check the DEF suction line heater relay, wiring harness, and electrical connectors at the DEF header for signs of wear, corrosion, or physical damage.

  4. Test heater resistance: Unplug the suction line heater and use a multimeter to test the resistance of the heating element to ensure it is not open or shorted internally.

Repair steps

  1. Safe Shutdown

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and follow proper shutdown procedures. Wait for the DEF system to complete its purge cycle and for the DCU to power down completely before disconnecting any batteries or components.

  2. Software Flash (If Applicable)

    Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the DCU software is outdated, flash it with the latest version per dealer bulletins. If the code clears and the heater functions, no hardware replacement is needed.

  3. Access the DEF Tank/Lines

    Locate the DEF tank and trace the DEF suction line (inlet line) running from the DEF tank header to the dosing pump module.

  4. Disconnect Wiring

    Disconnect the electrical connector for the suction line heater.

  5. Remove the Faulty Line

    If the heater element inside the suction line is confirmed defective via multimeter testing, disconnect the fluid fittings at both ends of the suction line. (Note: Catch any spilled DEF and clean it immediately with warm water, as it is highly corrosive to metal).

  6. Replace the Line

    Install the new heated DEF suction line assembly. Ensure the fluid fittings click securely into place to prevent air leaks, which will cause dosing pressure faults.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new line.

  8. Clear and Test

    Use the diagnostic tool to clear the DCU error codes. Run a manual DEF dosing test or system heater test to verify the suction line heater circuit is operating correctly and drawing the appropriate amperage.
