Case IH 19348 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout of CAN-Receive-Frame High Resolution Vehicle Distance (HRVD)

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error. It indicates that the receiving module expected to see the HRVD data packet (which broadcasts precise vehicle distance and speed data) on the CAN network, but the message was not received within the programmed time limit.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Companion Codes: Determine if 19348 is the only CAN timeout code. If multiple 'Timeout of CAN-Receive-Frame' codes are present, the entire CAN bus may be down or shorted. If it is the only code, the issue is likely isolated to the module broadcasting the HRVD message.

  2. Inspect Connectors: Check the wiring harness connectors at the ECM and the Body Computer for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  3. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect the machine's battery. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or module connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms.

  4. Verify Power and Ground: Ensure the Body Computer (or the module generating the vehicle distance data) has proper voltage and a solid ground connection. A module powering down intermittently will fail to broadcast its CAN frames.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Trace the CAN Network

    Follow the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECM and the Body Computer. Look for areas where the harness routes near sharp frame edges, moving linkages, or heat sources where chafing or melting may have occurred.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If an open or short circuit is found in the CAN lines, repair the wiring. Note: CAN bus wires are a twisted pair. When repairing them, you must maintain the twist rate (usually one twist per inch) to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  4. Service Connectors

    If connector pins are corroded, clean them thoroughly with contact cleaner. If the pins are damaged or spread, replace the connector pigtail or the individual pins.

  5. Module Software/Replacement

    If the wiring, terminating resistors, and connector pins all test perfectly, the issue lies within the module broadcasting the HRVD message (Body Computer) or a software glitch. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for available software updates (reflashes) for the Body Computer and ECM.

  6. Clear and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and test drive the tractor/machine to verify the HRVD message is being received and the code does not return.
