Case IH 19354 – Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Timeout of CAN-Transmit-Frame MVS, Maximum Vehicle Speed Limits

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error indicating that the control module expected to receive a specific data frame containing the Maximum Vehicle Speed (MVS) limit parameters, but the message was not received within the programmed time window (timeout).

   Verify that the battery voltage is sufficient and stable, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN network.

   Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19351, 19353) which indicate a main CAN bus failure.

   Inspect the main wiring harness running between the VCM and the ECM for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the VCM and ECM connectors to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back pins.

   With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing/failed resistor or open circuit).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the battery disconnect switch to protect the sensitive ECUs.

   Clean and Reseat Connectors

   If moisture or light corrosion was found during the diagnostic checks, clean the VCM and ECM connector pins with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) and securely reseat the connectors.

   Repair Wiring

   If the continuity test revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, locate the damaged section of the harness. Splice and solder the wires using OEM-approved heat-shrink tubing to ensure a weather-tight seal.

   Check Terminating Resistors

   If the CAN resistance was incorrect, locate the CAN terminating resistors on the harness. Replace the resistor if it tests faulty.

   Software Flash

   If the wiring, connectors, and resistors are all in perfect condition, connect the CNH EST and check if there is a software update available for the VCM or ECM that addresses MVS frame timeouts.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and test drive the machine at various speeds to ensure the CAN network is communicating properly and the code does not return.
