Case IH 19357 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM) / Dosing Control Unit: CAN-Receive-Frame from NOx Sensor (NOx-Data)

Issue description

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus indicating the control module is not receiving the expected data frame (signal) from the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor, or the signal has timed out.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the 5-pin MCON connector leading to the NOx sensor for melted wires, chafing, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Verify that the NOx sensor is receiving proper battery voltage (12V/24V depending on the system) and has a solid ground. Low or high battery voltage can disable power stage diagnostics and disrupt CAN communication.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity between the sensor connector and the ECM/ACM. Ensure there are no shorts to ground or shorts to power.

  4. Scan the system for other SCR or CAN timeout codes (such as 3533 CAN Message timeout NOx). If multiple sensors are dropping offline, the issue is likely in the main CAN harness rather than the sensor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off ignition and disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate faulty NOx sensor

    Locate the faulty NOx sensor on the exhaust system (the diagnostic tool will specify if it is the upstream or downstream sensor).

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the NOx sensor module.

  4. Unscrew sensor probe

    Using a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket, carefully unscrew the sensor probe from the exhaust pipe. (Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized).

  5. Apply anti-seize compound

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (avoid getting any on the sensor tip).

  6. Install new NOx sensor

    Thread the new NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Mount control module and connect

    Mount the sensor's control module to the frame and plug in the electrical connector.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear fault codes

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault codes. Note: An error clearing procedure or an SCR system reset/regeneration may be required to initialize the new sensor and clear the derate condition.
