Case IH 19358 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): CAN-Receive-Frame NOxDataUs (Upstream NOx Sensor)
Issue description
The control module has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication with the Upstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Sensor. The sensor is failing to broadcast its data frame to the network.

Check the cause
Inspect the 5-pin electrical connector at the upstream NOx sensor for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Verify that the sensor is receiving proper battery voltage (typically 12V or 24V depending on the machine) and has a solid ground connection.
Test the CAN High and CAN Low circuits for continuity between the sensor harness and the ECM/DCU. Ensure there are no shorts to ground or shorts to power.
Check the CAN bus terminating resistance across the network (should read approximately 60 ohms).
If power, ground, and CAN lines are fully intact, conclude that the NOx sensor's integrated control module has failed internally.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes. Ensure the exhaust system has completely cooled down.
Locate the Sensor
Find the upstream NOx sensor, which is threaded into the exhaust pipe prior to the SCR catalyst.
Disconnect
Unplug the 5-pin electrical connector from the machine's wiring harness.
Removal
Using a specialized NOx sensor socket or an appropriately sized wrench, carefully unthread the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Note: If the sensor is seized, apply penetrating fluid and allow it to soak to avoid stripping the exhaust bung threads.
Preparation of New Sensor
Apply a high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied from the factory). Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor probe tip, as this will contaminate it.
Installation
Thread the new sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Routing
Route the sensor cable (typically 608mm - 615mm long) exactly as the old one was routed, ensuring it is secured away from extreme heat sources and moving parts. Reconnect the 5-pin plug.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear fault code 19358. Run the engine to verify that CAN communication is restored and the code does not return.
