Case IH 19368 – VCM, ECM, or DCU: CAN-Receive-Frame PTOTx (Ambient Conditions CAN frame)

Issue description

This is a CAN bus communication error indicating a timeout or loss of signal where the receiving control module is no longer detecting the 'PTOTx' data frame (Ambient Conditions data) on the CAN network.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH T7 Series Tractors
  • Case IH Puma & Steiger Series Tractors
  • Case N-Series Loader Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., P0600, or other 193xx/33xx series codes) to see if multiple modules are dropping offline, indicating a main CAN bus wiring fault.

  2. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors between the VCM/ECM and the ambient conditions sensor for chafed wires, moisture intrusion, or bent pins.

  3. Test CAN bus resistance across CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port with the machine keyed off and battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing terminating resistor or open circuit).

  4. Verify the module or sensor transmitting the ambient conditions frame is receiving proper 12V power and ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes while working on the CAN network.

  2. Isolate the Fault

If the CAN resistance test fails, isolate sections of the harness by unplugging inline connectors until the 60-ohm reading is restored, which will pinpoint the short or open circuit.

  3. Repair Wiring

Repair any broken, corroded, or chafed wires in the CAN High (usually yellow) or CAN Low (usually green) lines using OEM-approved weather-pack connectors and heat shrink.

  4. Replace the Sensor/Module

If the wiring harness, power, and ground are all intact, the sensor or module responsible for broadcasting the PTOTx ambient conditions frame has failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 19368 fault code.

  6. Test Run

Cycle the key and run the machine to ensure the VCM successfully receives the ambient conditions frame and the code does not return.
