Case IH 19369 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Denoxtronic Control Unit (DCU): CAN-Receive-Frame Timeout Error of Retarder Configuration
Issue description
A Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error indicating that the control module expected to receive a digital message containing the configuration or status of the vehicle's retarder (engine brake / exhaust brake) over the CAN bus, but the message timed out.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Tier 4b
- Puma
- Optum
- Magnum
Check the cause
Check Battery and System Voltage: A common cause of CAN bus timeouts in Case IH tractors is low voltage during cranking or operation, which causes modules to temporarily drop offline.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN-Receive-Frame timeout codes (like P0600 or 19578). If multiple CAN codes are present, the issue is a network-wide disruption (e.g., a damaged CAN backbone or terminating resistor) rather than an isolated retarder issue.
Verify Machine Equipment: Determine if the tractor is actually equipped with an engine retarder/exhaust brake. If it is not, the ECU may have been incorrectly programmed or lost its configuration data, causing it to "look" for a module that doesn't exist.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the CAN bus wiring harness for moisture intrusion, corrosion in the plugs, or chafed wires, which are common weak points on these electrical systems.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) via the diagnostic port to read all active and stored fault codes.
Inspect the Physical Network
If the tractor is equipped with a retarder, trace the CAN wiring (CAN High / CAN Low) from the retarder control valve/module back to the ECM.
Repair Wiring
Clean any moisture or corrosion from the connectors using electrical contact cleaner. Repair any broken or chafed wires in the harness.
Check Terminating Resistors
Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the CAN bus (should be approximately 60 ohms with the battery disconnected). If it reads 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors has failed or is disconnected.
Reconfigure the ECU (If applicable)
If the tractor does not have a retarder, use the Case IH EST software to access the vehicle configuration parameters. Ensure the "Retarder Configuration" is set to "0" (No Retarder) so the ECM stops expecting the CAN message.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes using the EST, cycle the ignition key, and run the tractor to verify the code does not return.
