Case IH 19371 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame RESET

There is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication breakdown. The receiving module timed out because it did not receive the expected 'RESET' data frame (or received a frame with an incorrect data length) from the transmitting module (Vehicle Control Module) within the required time window.

   Verify battery voltage is within specification and ground connections to the ECM and VCM are clean and tight

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the VCM and the ECM for chafing, opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

   Disconnect harnesses at the VCM and ECM to check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion

   With the battery disconnected, measure resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure terminating resistors are intact (approximately 60 ohms)

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Isolate the Fault

   Using a multimeter, perform continuity and resistance tests on the CAN lines between the VCM and ECM based on the diagnostic checks above.

   Repair Wiring

   If a short or break is found in the CAN wiring, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the harness entirely.

   Clean Connections

   Apply dielectric grease and securely reconnect the VCM and ECM harnesses if the issue was traced to a loose or corroded pin.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring harness, power, and grounds all test perfectly, the fault likely lies within the transmitting module (VCM) failing to send the frame, or the receiving module (ECM) failing to process it. Replace the faulty module. (Note: Replacing the VCM or ECM will require a dealer to flash/reprogram the new module to the tractor's specific configuration).

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, cycle the key, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes and verify the CAN bus is communicating properly.
