Case IH 19372 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame RF (Hydraulic Retarder Oil Temperature)

The primary control module is experiencing a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication timeout, failing to receive the 'RF' data frame which broadcasts the current oil temperature of the hydraulic retarder system.

   Verify if there are other CAN bus timeout codes present (e.g., 19369 or 19371) to rule out a broader network issue like a damaged CAN backbone or terminating resistor.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the hydraulic retarder oil temperature sensor to the ECM/VCM for chafed wires, rodent damage, or corrosion in the connector pins.

   Verify the tractor's battery voltage and ground connections, as low voltage to the electronic control module can disrupt CAN transmission.

   Test the hydraulic retarder oil temperature sensor with a multimeter to ensure it is reading within the specified resistance range for the ambient temperature.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the hydraulic retarder unit (typically integrated into the transmission/drivetrain housing) and identify the oil temperature sensor.

   Clean and Re-seat

   Disconnect the sensor's wiring harness. Spray the connector pins (both on the sensor and the harness side) with an approved electronic contact cleaner. Re-seat the connector firmly to ensure a solid connection.

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a break or short in the CAN wiring to the sensor, splice in a CAN bus wiring repair kit, ensuring the twisted-pair wiring is maintained to prevent electromagnetic interference.

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the resistance test, unthread the old hydraulic retarder oil temperature sensor. Install the new sensor, being careful not to overtighten, and plug in the harness.

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port to clear the 19372 fault code. Test drive the tractor, utilizing the retarder on a descent if possible, to verify the code does not return and that braking force is consistent.
