Case IH 19374 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): CAN timeout error - RxEngTemp2 (EGR exhaust gas temperature) message

The control module has lost communication with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) temperature sensor over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The sensor is failing to broadcast its temperature data packets to the network within the expected timeframe.

   Verify the EGR temperature sensor is physically present and not damaged

   Inspect the CAN cable connecting the EGR sensor to the main engine harness for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or chafed insulation

   Check for undervoltage at the EGR sensor connector to ensure it is receiving the correct reference voltage and ground from the ECM

   Check the CAN High and CAN Low lines for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network) to verify network integrity

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the exhaust and EGR system to cool completely.

   The EGR system operates at extremely high temperatures.

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   This prevents electrical shorts during the repair.

   Locate the EGR exhaust gas temperature sensor.

   Typically mounted in the EGR venturi tube or the exhaust plumbing leading to the EGR mixer/cooler.

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the EGR temperature sensor.

   Inspect the harness-side pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals.

   Loosen and remove the EGR temperature sensor.

   Use an appropriate wrench or specialized sensor socket. Apply penetrating oil if the sensor threads are seized.

   Install the new sensor.

   Apply a small amount of high-temp anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied), being careful not to get any on the sensor probe itself. Thread it in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor.

   Ensure the locking tab clicks securely.

   Reconnect the battery, clear codes, and test.

   Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to clear the 19374 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the live EGR temperature data to ensure the sensor is communicating properly on the CAN bus.
