Case IH 19376 – Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout of CAN-Receive-Frame Vehicle Distance (VD) message

The control module expected to receive the standard SAE J1939 'Vehicle Distance' data frame (PGN 65248) from another module on the network, but the message was not received within the programmed time limit.

   Check for multiple codes: If multiple CAN timeout codes are logged (e.g., 19401, 19403), the entire CAN bus backbone is likely compromised. If 19376 is the only code, the issue may be isolated to the module broadcasting the VD message (TCM) or a software glitch.

   Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect the battery, locate the CAN diagnostic connector, and measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low pins. Total circuit resistance should be approximately 60 ohms.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the VCM, TCM, and ECU for moisture intrusion, corrosion, chafed wires, or pushed-out pins.

   Verify that the VCM and TCM are receiving proper battery voltage and have clean, secure ground connections.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.

   Isolate Wiring Faults

   If the resistance test fails, trace the CAN backbone harness between the VCM and the TCM/ECU. Repair any broken, chafed, or shorted wires.

   Clean Connectors

   Disconnect the VCM and TCM harness connectors. Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to remove any light corrosion, and ensure all pins are fully seated in their plastic housings. Reconnect securely.

   Software Update

   If the wiring is intact and resistance is exactly 60 ohms, connect the Case Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic connector. Check for available software updates for the VCM and TCM. Reflash the modules if an update is available, as timeout errors can sometimes be resolved by software patches.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring is perfect, software is up to date, and the VCM is still failing to receive the VD message, the module responsible for broadcasting the message (TCM) or the VCM itself has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
