Case IH 19377 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame SERV

Issue description

A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error indicating that the control module has lost communication or timed out while trying to transmit or receive the 'SERV' frame, which contains the Service Component ID and service distance data.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Tractors equipped with Tier 4B (Urea) Engines
  • Case N-Series Loader Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN bus pathways for signal interruptions between the ECM/VCM and the display/service modules

  2. Inspect wiring and connectors for moisture intrusion in plugs, corroded pins, or chafed wiring harnesses

  3. Verify power and ground by checking battery voltage, charging system, and power distribution blocks for weak grounds or voltage drops

  4. Inspect the module internally (if accessible) for failed CAN transceivers, cracked solder joints, or burnt components

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery Power

Always disconnect the battery before servicing ECU wiring or CAN bus lines to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Repair Connections

Disconnect the harness at the ECM/VCM. Clean out any moisture or corrosion using electrical contact cleaner. Ensure all pins are straight and seated tightly.

  3. Perform Continuity Testing

Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the CAN bus lines (CAN High and CAN Low) between the ECM and the service display/body controller. Standard CAN bus resistance should measure approximately 60 ohms with the battery disconnected.

  4. Repair Wiring

If an open circuit or short-to-ground is found in the harness, splice and seal the damaged section of the wire, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Module Repair/Replacement

If the wiring tests good but the module still fails to transmit the SERV frame, the ECM or VCM has suffered an internal CAN transceiver failure. The module must be sent to an electronics repair specialist (e.g., UpFix) or replaced entirely.

  6. Clear Codes and Retest

Reconnect the system, power on the machine, and use a diagnostic scanner (like a Jaltest or CNH EST tool) to clear the fault codes. Run the machine to verify that the CAN-Transmit-Frame SERV timeout does not return.

Parts you might need
