Case IH 19378 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) or Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN-Transmit-Frame Shut down.

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication error. The control module expected to transmit or receive a specific CAN message frame (a "Shut down" command or status) within a designated timeframe, but the message timed out. This indicates a physical interruption on the CAN bus network, a corrupted data packet, or a module dropping offline.

   Check for accompanying codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Multiple modules reporting timeouts indicate a central CAN bus wiring issue or failed termination resistor.

   Measure CAN bus resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic connector with the battery disconnected. A healthy bus reads 60 Ohms; 120 Ohms indicates a missing/faulty resistor or open circuit, and 0 Ohms indicates a short.

   Measure CAN bus voltage to ground with the battery reconnected and key ON (engine off). CAN High should be 2.5V to 3.0V DC, and CAN Low should be 2.0V to 2.5V DC.

   Physically inspect the core wire harness for degradation, paying special attention to the DEF/SCR system wiring and areas where the harness bends or rubs against the chassis.

   Isolate the Fault

   If the resistance check yielded 120 Ohms, locate the CAN bus terminating resistors (there are typically two on the main circuit; one is often located near the air filter or under the cab controllers, while the other may be internal to the ECU).

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any electrical repairs.

   Inspect Connectors

   Disconnect the main harness at the VCM/ECU. Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress inside the Deutsch connectors.

   Repair Wiring/Resistor

   If a terminating resistor is found to be faulty or physically damaged, replace it with a new OEM resistor module. If the harness is chafed (commonly found under the cab or near the engine block), repair the damaged CAN High or CAN Low wires using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors or replace the affected harness section.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all modules and the battery. Connect the Case IH EST, clear the 19378 fault code, and cycle the key to verify the code does not return and communication is restored.
