Case IH 19380 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame TCFG2

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Transmission Controller (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. Specifically, the engine is expecting to receive the 'TCFG2' message—which contains the Transmission Torque Limit data—but the message is missing or timing out.

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage for low battery or failing alternator, which can cause CAN modules to drop offline

  2. Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller for chafing, breaks, or shorts to ground

  3. Test terminating resistors with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN bus network (should read exactly 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing/failed resistor, infinite resistance indicates a broken wire)

  4. Inspect wiring harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Locate the Transmission Controller and the Engine ECU. Unplug the main harness connectors. Inspect the pins. Clean them with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat them.

  3. Repair Wiring / Resistors

    If your multimeter test revealed 120 ohms on the CAN network, locate the faulty 120-ohm terminating resistor and replace it. If you found an open or shorted wire during continuity testing, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the harness entirely.

  4. Test the Transmission Controller

    If the wiring is completely intact, the terminating resistors read 60 ohms, and the connectors are clean, the CAN transceiver inside the Transmission Controller (or VCM) has likely failed internally.

  5. Replace and Reprogram

    Replace the Transmission Controller. Note that a new controller will require programming/calibration using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to sync with the tractor's specific configuration.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 19380 fault code. Start the machine to verify the code does not return.
