Case IH 19381 – ECU: DEF Tank Information CAN Timeout

Issue description

The TI1 CAN message is responsible for transmitting the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid / AdBlue) tank level and tank temperature data to the machine's computer. A CAN timeout error means that the control module is expecting this data packet over the Controller Area Network (CAN bus) but is not receiving it. This typically indicates a loss of communication with the DEF tank header unit (which houses the level and temperature sensors) due to a wiring failure, a failed sensor, or a CAN network disruption.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the DEF tank header to the ECU/VCM for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the electrical plug at the DEF tank header and check for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Verify that the DEF tank header is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  4. Check the CAN High and CAN Low wires at the sensor connector for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network when powered down) and voltage to ensure the network is intact.

  5. Look for other CAN timeout codes; if multiple modules are dropping offline, the issue is likely a main CAN bus wiring problem rather than the DEF header itself.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the top of the DEF tank around the header assembly to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the tank.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully disconnect the DEF suction, return, and coolant/heating lines from the header. Cap the lines immediately to prevent contamination.

  4. Disconnect Electrical

    Unplug the main electrical connector from the DEF tank sensor.

  5. Remove Header

    Unscrew the locking ring or retaining bolts holding the DEF header to the tank. Carefully pull the header assembly straight up and out of the tank, being mindful of the long sensor rod and suction tubes.

  6. Install New Part

    Insert the new DEF tank header assembly into the tank. Ensure the rubber O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks. Tighten the locking ring/bolts to OEM spec.

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect all DEF fluid lines, coolant lines, and the electrical connector.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 19381 fault code and run a Urea Dosing System Test to prime the lines and verify the ECU is reading the tank level and temperature correctly.
