Case IH 19382 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ENG): Timeout of CAN-Transmit-Frame ECU2BC, ECU to Body Computer
Issue description
A Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication or failed to transmit/receive expected data frames to the Body Computer (BC) / Vehicle Control Module within the required time limit. This is typically caused by a physical wiring issue on the CAN bus network, low voltage, or a faulty module connection.

Check the cause
Verify battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage, as low system voltage can cause CAN modules to drop offline
Inspect the main wiring harness running from the engine block (ECU) to the cab firewall (Body Computer) for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage
Disconnect the Engine ECU and Body Computer connectors and inspect for water intrusion, green corrosion, or pushed-back pins
Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected: measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (healthy is ~60 ohms; ~120 ohms indicates an open circuit/missing resistor; 0-5 ohms indicates a short)
Check for accompanying active CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19384 MUXINFO, 3180 Vehicle Control Module) which indicate a total bus failure rather than an isolated ECU-to-BC wire issue
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the multimeter resistance test, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the Body Computer.
Repair Wiring
If a break or short is found in the harness (commonly near articulation joints or firewall pass-throughs), cut out the damaged section. Solder and heat-shrink the repair, or use OEM-approved weather-sealed butt connectors.
Clean Connections
If the wiring is intact but connectors are corroded, use electrical contact cleaner and a terminal tool to clean the pins. Apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Replace Terminating Resistor (If Applicable)
If the CAN network is missing a resistor (reading 120 ohms), locate the faulty CAN terminating resistor plug on the harness and replace it.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU memory.
Test Run
Start the engine and operate the machine's hydraulic and PTO functions to ensure the Body Computer and ECU are communicating properly and the code does not return.
