Case IH 19395 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: CAN timeout error - TSC1DE message (Torque/Speed control from ABS/ASR to ECM - Limp home status)

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error. The TSC1DE message contains torque and speed demand information sent from the ABS/ASR (Anti-lock Braking System / Anti-Slip Regulation) or the Driveline Retarder to the engine. When the engine controller stops receiving this message at the expected rate, it triggers a timeout. The engine defaults to a protective Limp Home mode, severely restricting engine power and RPM.

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if other modules are reporting CAN bus timeout errors (e.g., codes 19396, 19397, or 19400).

  2. Inspect the main CAN bus wiring harness between the ECM, the ABS/ASR controller, and the Driveline Retarder for chafed wires, pinch points, or rodent damage.

  3. Disconnect the harness at the ECM and the ABS/ASR module to check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion inside the connectors.

  4. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a faulty resistor/open circuit, 0 ohms indicates a short).

  5. Verify that the Driveline Retarder or ABS/ASR module is receiving power and ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Repair Wiring/Connectors

    If the visual inspection or resistance test revealed a short, open circuit, or damaged connector, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splice kits or replace the damaged connector pins.

  3. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance tested at 120 ohms and wiring is intact, locate and replace the failed CAN bus terminating resistor.

  4. Test Module Power/Ground

    Reconnect the battery. Back-probe the ABS/ASR module connector to ensure it is receiving 12V power and has a solid ground. If power/ground is missing, trace and repair the supply circuit or replace the blown fuse.

  5. Replace Faulty Module

    If the wiring, terminating resistors, and power/ground supplies are all perfect, the CAN controller inside either the ABS/ASR module or the ECM has failed. Replace the suspect module (usually the ABS/ASR module is the culprit if the ECM is still communicating with the diagnostic tool).

  6. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect all components, connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the 19395 fault code, and test drive the machine to ensure it successfully exits Limp Home mode.
