Case IH 19396 – ECM / VCM: CAN-Receive-Frame Torque / Speed control from ABS / ASR to ECM through TSC1_PR Message

Issue description

This code indicates a CAN bus communication timeout or failure. Specifically, the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) is expecting to receive a Torque/Speed Control (TSC1_PR) message from the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) module, but the message is missing or corrupted. This usually points to a wiring issue on the CAN network, a loss of power to the ABS/ASR module, or a failed ABS/ASR controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Related Codes: Look for other CAN timeout codes (such as 19394, 19395, or 19397). If multiple modules are dropping off the network, the issue is likely a main CAN backbone failure rather than the ABS module itself.

  2. Verify Power and Ground: Test the power supply and ground circuits going directly to the ABS/ASR control module. If the module has no power, it cannot transmit the TSC1_PR message to the ECM.

  3. Inspect the CAN Bus: Check the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ABS/ASR module and the ECM for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors: Measure the resistance across the CAN bus network (with the battery disconnected). It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminating resistor is faulty or disconnected.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the machine's battery before repairing CAN wiring or replacing modules.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the ABS/ASR module and disconnect its main harness. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean with contact cleaner if minor corrosion is present.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a break or short in the CAN wiring, splice in a new twisted-pair CAN wire using an approved CAN-bus repair kit, ensuring the twists are maintained as close to the connectors as possible.

  4. Replace the Module

    If wiring, power, and grounds are all intact and the CAN bus resistance is correct, the ABS/ASR module has internally failed. Unbolt the module, install the replacement, and reconnect the harness.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and perform any necessary module initialization or calibration for the new ABS/ASR unit.
