Case IH 19398 – VCM: CAN timeout error - CCV message (Reception and evaluation of cruise control vehicle speed)

Issue description

The control module is expecting to receive the Cruise Control Vehicle (CCV) speed data message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus, but the message was not received within the programmed time limit (timeout).

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case N-series TLBs (Tractor Loader Backhoes) Tier 4 Final
  • CNH Tier 4 Final equipment

Check the cause

  1. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault is currently active

  2. Check the EST for other related CAN bus communication faults to determine if there is a broader main CAN bus wiring failure

  3. Visually inspect the harnesses and connectors leading to the VCM for damaged wires, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or loose connectors

  4. Flex and wiggle the involved wiring harnesses while monitoring the display or EST to reveal intermittent breaks or shorts in the wiring

  5. Verify that the VCM is receiving proper supply voltage and has a solid ground connection

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Stop the engine, turn off the ignition, and let the machine cool down before starting work.

  2. Disconnect the VCM

Locate the VCM and disconnect the vehicle (VE) harness from the module.

  3. Test the CAN Circuit

With the ignition switch in the ON position, use a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low circuits on the harness side. Test for open circuits, shorts to ground, or short circuits between wires.

  4. Repair Wiring

If a short or break is found in the CAN wiring, use the machine's specific electrical schematic to locate the damaged conductor and repair or replace the affected harness section or connector pins.

  5. Evaluate the VCM

If the wiring, power, and ground all test perfectly, the fault may lie within the VCM itself (e.g., a faulty internal CAN termination resistor or a software glitch).

  6. Reassemble and Clear

Reconnect all harnesses securely. Use the EST to clear the fault codes, then test operate the machine to verify that the CCV message is now being received and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

    293804SB1B

Generic VCM reference; order the specific VCM for your machine's serial number to ensure proper programming

  • Wiring Harness / Connectors

Generic CNH electrical repair terminals or model-specific CAN bus harness sections
