Case IH 19399 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module): CAN timeout error - DD message

This fault code indicates a communication failure on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the control module has timed out because it did not receive a required data packet (the "DD message") from another module on the network within the expected timeframe.

   Verify that the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting the correct voltage. Low system voltage can cause modules to temporarily drop off the CAN bus.

   Visually inspect the main CAN bus wiring harness between the VCM and other modules (like the Engine Control Module/EDC) for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the VCM harness connectors and inspect the pins. Look for pushed-back pins, bent terminals, moisture intrusion, or green corrosion.

   With the machine off and the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or a missing terminating resistor.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Clean and Reseat Connectors

   If corrosion or moisture was found during the diagnostic checks, clean the VCM and associated module pins with electrical contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals to prevent future moisture intrusion, and firmly reseat the connectors.

   Repair Wiring

   If the CAN bus resistance test failed or physical damage was found, locate the break or short in the CAN High/CAN Low twisted pair wiring. Splice and solder the damaged section, then seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

   Module Replacement (If Necessary)

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly (correct resistance, no shorts to ground/power) and the connectors are pristine, the VCM or the module responsible for broadcasting the "DD message" may have an internal failure and require replacement.

   Clear and Retest

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 19399 fault code. Start the machine and operate the loader/backhoe functions to verify the code does not return.
