Case IH 19404 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) and Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN-Transmit-Frame WFL, Water in fuel indicator message

This fault code indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error. Specifically, the CAN frame responsible for transmitting the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor status has timed out. The control module is either failing to broadcast the message or failing to receive the expected signal from the WIF sensor circuit, meaning the machine cannot accurately monitor if water has accumulated in the fuel system.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the primary fuel filter / water separator. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the bottom of the filter for damage, broken wires, or heavy corrosion.

   Drain the Separator: Place a pan under the filter and open the drain valve to see if excessive water is actually present in the fuel system, which can sometimes cause erratic sensor readings.

   Circuit Testing: Check for continuity on the CAN bus lines and the WIF sensor wiring harness leading back to the Engine ECU/VCM. Look for shorts to ground or open circuits.

   Prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, lower all attachments to the ground, and turn off the engine.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate assembly

   Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator assembly (typically mounted on the side of the engine block).

   Disconnect sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the WIF sensor located at the very bottom of the fuel filter.

   Drain fuel and water

   Place a drain pan underneath the filter and open the petcock/valve to drain the fuel and water from the housing.

   Remove faulty sensor

   Unscrew the faulty WIF sensor from the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

   Install new sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring of the new WIF sensor with clean diesel fuel and thread it into the bottom of the filter (do not overtighten, as it is usually plastic).

   Reconnect wiring

   Reconnect the electrical wiring harness to the new sensor.

   Prime fuel system

   Prime the fuel system to purge any air introduced during the repair.

    Clear fault code

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19404 fault code.
