19417

Case IH 19417 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Over pressure in the crankcase system

Issue description

The engine's crankcase pressure has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold. This occurs when the crankcase ventilation system is restricted or if the engine is producing excessive blow-by, causing pressure to build up.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • Optum
  • Vestrum
  • 6140
  • 7140
  • 7240
  • 7250
  • 8240
  • 8250
  • 9240
  • 1021G
  • 1121F
  • 1121G

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Crankcase Breather Filter (Blow-By Filter) for saturation, heavy plugging, or freezing.

  2. Check the Crankcase Ventilation Tubes routing from the crankcase to the air intake for kinks, blockages, or ice buildup.

  3. Test the Crankcase Pressure Sensor for accurate readings and check the engine sensor harness for continuity.

  4. Evaluate Engine Blow-By for internal wear (e.g., worn piston rings or cylinder liners) if the filter and sensor are functioning properly.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Filter

Locate the crankcase breather filter assembly on the engine. On larger FPT engines, it is often bolted near the front gear cover.

  2. Remove the Housing

Carefully remove the bolts securing the filter housing. CRITICAL WARNING: Be extremely careful not to drop the mounting bolts when removing the filter. Dropped bolts can fall directly into the front gear cover, which will require extensive teardown and can cause severe engine damage.

  3. Replace the Filter

Remove the old, saturated blow-by filter element. Clean the housing mating surfaces and install the new filter element.

  4. Replace the Sensor (If Necessary)

If the filter was not restricted, locate the crankcase pressure sensor, disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and install the new one.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 19417 fault code from the ECM. Run the engine and verify that crankcase pressure returns to normal operating parameters.
