Case IH 19433 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / A-9000 ECU: Engine compression brake high side driver circuit short to ground failure
Issue description
The electronic control system has detected that the voltage on the high side of the engine compression brake solenoid circuit has shorted to a ground source. When this occurs, the engine compression brake cannot be activated properly, and the system logs the fault to prevent circuit damage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU (A-9000) to the engine compression brake solenoid (Y-9007) for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the engine block or chassis.
Disconnect the harness at the ECU and at the compression brake solenoid to check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the high-side driver pin to a ground pin.
With the harness disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the high-side driver wire and a known good chassis ground to verify if the harness is shorted.
Test the engine compression brake solenoid coil by measuring resistance across the pins and checking for continuity between the high-side pin and the metal housing to identify an internal short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Isolate the Short
Based on the multimeter testing, determine if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the solenoid.
Repair the Harness
If the short is in the wiring, locate the chafed or melted section. Splice in a new section of wire using proper weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely. Secure the harness away from high-heat or high-vibration areas.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid is internally shorted to ground, remove the valve cover (if the brake is integrated into the valvetrain/rocker assembly) or locate the external actuator. Unbolt the defective solenoid, install the new replacement, and torque to OEM specifications.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the wiring harness and battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 19433 / 73F3 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and test the engine compression brake functionality to ensure the code does not return.
