Case IH 19436 (DTC E46D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): ECU internal failure - EEPROM write error

The EEPROM is the internal memory chip where the module stores critical operating parameters. A write error indicates that the module's microprocessor is attempting to save data to this memory but is failing. This is typically caused by internal hardware degradation, a corrupted dataset from a failed software flash/tuning attempt, or a sudden loss of power during a memory write cycle.

   Check for Tampering/Tuning: Determine if the machine recently had an aftermarket tune, 'delete,' or software flash attempted. Incompatible datasets or interrupted flashes are a primary cause of EEPROM checksum/write failures.

   Verify Power and Ground: Inspect the K15 (Ignition On) signal wiring and main power/ground circuits to the ECU. A sudden voltage drop, defective power supply, or faulty main relay during a write cycle can trigger this error.

   Software Update/Reflash: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and attempt to perform a new download of the dedicated dataset (re-flash the ECU with OEM software) to see if the memory corruption can be overwritten.

   Connect diagnostic tool

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port.

   Read and clear codes

   Read and clear the fault codes to determine if 19436 is an active or stored (intermittent) fault.

   Inspect wiring harness

   Inspect the ECU wiring harness, specifically the K15 ignition circuit and main battery feeds, ensuring there is no corrosion or loose pins that could cause power interruption.

   Attempt re-flash

   Using the EST, attempt to re-flash the ECU with the latest factory dataset/software variant for that specific machine PIN (Product Identification Number).

   Re-check fault code

   Cycle the key and re-check for the fault code.

   Evaluate ECU failure

   If the code returns immediately or the flash fails, the ECU has suffered an irreversible internal hardware failure.

   Remove and replace/repair ECU

   Remove the defective ECU. You can either send it to a specialized module repair service (for cloning/repair) or replace it with a new/remanufactured OEM unit.

   Program new ECU

   If installing a new or remanufactured ECU, use the EST to program the module with the correct dataset and perform all necessary engine and emissions calibrations.
