Case IH 19438 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Indicates if a TMFW resonance shutoff condition is active

Issue description

The system has detected excessive resonance (severe vibration or oscillation) in the two-mass flywheel. To protect the engine and transmission from catastrophic mechanical failure, the control module triggers an active shutoff condition, cutting power or shutting down the engine.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the crankshaft and camshaft speed sensors for erratic signals or electrical noise that can trick the ECU into detecting false oscillation

  2. Check for uneven engine running, injector faults, or misfires, which can induce resonance in a perfectly healthy two-mass flywheel

  3. Ensure battery voltage is stable and check the wiring harnesses for the engine speed sensors for shorts to ground or battery

  4. Listen for excessive rattling, clanking, or knocking coming from the bell housing area during startup, shutdown, or idle (indicates a collapsed TMFW)

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Machine

    Safely park the machine on a flat surface, disconnect the battery, and prepare the tractor for splitting.

  2. Split the Tractor

    Disconnect all necessary hydraulic lines, electrical harnesses, and linkage. Split the tractor at the engine-to-transmission bell housing to gain access to the clutch and flywheel.

  3. Remove the Clutch

    Unbolt and remove the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc.

  4. Remove the TMFW

    Remove the flywheel mounting bolts and carefully remove the heavy two-mass flywheel.

  5. Inspect the Rear Main Seal

    While the flywheel is off, inspect the engine rear main seal for leaks and replace it if necessary.

  6. Install the New TMFW

    Position the new two-mass flywheel. Install new flywheel mounting bolts (these are typically torque-to-yield bolts and should not be reused).

  7. Torque to Spec

    Tighten the bolts crosswise to the OEM specification (e.g., hand-tighten, torque to a specific Nm value, followed by a 90-degree / 1/4 turn).

  8. Reassemble

    Reinstall the clutch assembly (it is highly recommended to install a new clutch disc and pressure plate when replacing a TMFW). Reconnect the engine and transmission halves.

  9. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear fault code 19438, and test run the machine to ensure smooth operation.
